ALTER GOGO* BY ANDREW ESIEBO FEATURES 11THE HAVANA BIENNIAL

Written by
Sunday, May 13th, 2012

Alter Gogo is a diptych portrait series featuring grandmothers who play football with the Gogo Getters Football Club in Orange Farm, a large township in South Africa. For them, playing the football has become a passport to a better life, giving the women social relevance in their community, as well as better health. Playing football is their solution to many social and physiological problems like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and alcohol addiction.
Alter Gogo also offers an alternative image of African women. Quite often in the mainstream imagination, African women are located in the sphere of “tradition”. They are presented – if at all – as victims of oppression, who have been forced to submit to tribal customs, with no authority, freedom or conception of self. Women with sad faces often complement the ever-pervasive images of Africa as a continent of famine, poverty and violence. Alter Gogo challenges all of these stereotypes as well the role attributed to women in their old age. The grandmothers’ regalia, their proud postures on the soccer field along with the charm of their intimate spaces and loves create a powerful socio-cultural scenario in which soccer is the means and expression of a new gender and generation identity.

Washington Roberts AW12 Collection Presentation

Written by
Sunday, May 13th, 2012

New York based Nigerian designer Washington Roberts recently presented the AW12 collection for his eponymous label. His signature aesthetic and cuts flowed through the collection. I especially love his use of a more varied collection of fabrics in glittering hues creating the elegant aw color palette. The label continues to grow from strength to strength and word has it, that it would be launching in Lagos, Nigeria soon.

Written by
Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Geo and Mombasa prints, Kitenge and Kanga cloth are some of the details in the spanking hot Asos Africa ss12 collection that just landed on their site. As i type some of the pieces are sold out and i’m sure the rest are flying off Asos warehouses into the hands of waiting fashionistas the world over. ASOS AFRICA channels a utilitarian vibe and re-interprets classic styles with a modern twist by experimenting with textures; slouchy jersey basics, shell tops and vibrant printed dresses with a clean sportswear silhouette.

Written by
Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Topman, Zara and now Asos are all cashing in on the African print by sending out dope stuff made with the print. I recently invested in the Zara African print tee and i would probably invest in this one too as soon as we start to see more of the sun here in London. It’s decently priced at £18, £1.99 lower than the Zara African print tee and it also features luxe details like a buttoned down contrast micro collar.

Behind the Scenes/Sneek Peek of the Alali Boutique A/W 2012 Collection

Written by
Sunday, April 29th, 2012

INSPIRATION FOR COLLECTION:

“Imagine you could wear really glamorous and stylish clothes jetskiing or wakeboarding….”

These were perhaps the subconscious thoughts in my mind last December when I spent the best part of my christmas holiday speeding through the creeks of Calabar and Opobo Kingdom. ‘Need for Glam’, the ALALI Boutique A/W 2012 Collection is inspired by surface water sports’ wear and the glamour of the 1950s unsuspectingly fused together to create the most wearable and delectable collection. Think speedy, glamourous and intriguing. For shapes I looked to the 1950s, for detail I looked to the panelling in sportswear and for colour, I looked to the landscape of the South-South of Nigeria.

Written by
Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Daisy Mak shares with us images of the Virgo’s Lounge Summer 2012 collection which by the way i’m totally blown away by.  Virgo’s Lounge sticks to their signature aesthetic and yet plays around it skillfully to create pop colored floral romantic pieces. My favorite collection from them so far, and looks like they can only get better at their craft.
