Irish designer Orla Kiely known for her prints took the opportunity to try something new for John Lewis on the occasion of their 150th anniversary and expanded her existing offering into menswear, available exclusively at John Lewis now. South African model Mac Phiri was the poster boy for the riviera inspired collection featuring cool and vibrant beach separates.
Fast fashion’s newest name, boohoo.com, proudly launches its menswear component, boohooMAN, in the United States for Spring/Summer 2014. The collection boasts a large selection of exclusive, in-house designed, fashion-forward looks for men; all retailing for under $100.00. The United Kingdom-based ecommerce retailer has been quickly gaining momentum in the men’s market, targeting fashion-forward, individually minded guys.
Lower prince points, less bling…YES PLEASE! Virgo’s Lounge are back in a subtler form with their diffusion line V Label London. The new label still retains a lot of the sister labels character and vibe but is less glittery and more affordable. A good direction for the label as I considered Virgo’s Lounge core aesthetic was formed almost solely on a trend that’s long gone. This might be good for the brand and might even prove more popular. Royal Academy of art Antwerp graduate Angelo Van Mol’s career was off to a bright start when his graduation collection won him the best menswear designer award at Arise Magazine fashion week years ago. He moved to London to horn his craft on Savile Row with a coveted head designer role at Ozwald Boateng. He has since moved on and focused on the foundation of mens wardrobes, shoes. His footwear always had intricate details and it comes as no surprise that he’s focusing on footwear for now. For ss14 he continued production in Italy with the skilled artisans he’s always worked with to make sure the desired level of craftsmanship was attained. He’s been able to fuse Savile Row elements with his more avant-garde aesthetic and in the process created hybrids that work well in formal or informal occasions. Shop the collection here now.
Pade David Bowler, creative director of luxury menswear label David Bowler visited the offices of GQ Italia and shared these photos today. Bowler is currently on a production trip for his labels leather goods.
Afritribe is back with its new duality collection which feature symbolic designs the label is notorious for. Brother Vellies has loads of goodstuff packed into their spring summer 2014 collection and these Springbok Congo sandals were Handcrafted and sourced entirely in South Africa. They are not for the average Mary and would definitely need someone who’s got a vibe that pulls it off. Retails here.
Moroccan born and London based Hajjaj fuses ,logos, objects, vibrant colors and textures, all with that cool Africana vibrancy. His biker chick Barbie dolls are dressed in mini djellabahs and face veils, or niqabs. In the series designer logos are paired with the conventional patterns of Middle Eastern rugs. Hajjaj manages to fuse pop culture and brand logo craze with North African lifestyle.
Ivorian label Laurenceairline recently launched its online store front bringing the labels offering to a wider audience and more directly. Before now Laurenceairline was sold at concept boutiques like Merchants on Long in Cape Town and other niche ones in Asia and Europe. The online store offers single pieces and gives you a 10% discount if you buy a full look.
Shem Paronelli brand first burst into the scene about 3 years ago and was a champion for everything handmade and crafted in Nigeria using quality materials. For over a year, the creative director went silent in his quest for rejuvenating the brand. Good news is its back, and looking a lot better and finer with age. Some shoes have been released as part of the 2014 pre-collection and the main one would release soon.
Jacqueline Shaw the Director of Africa Fashion Guide would be giving a talk on Ozwald Boateng for the 32 Londoners on the London Eye event on May 1st. The event celebrates the contribution of 32 Londoners to the cultural life of the capital and of course Ozwald’s contribution to the world of style and tailoring has been enormous. Amongst the amazing array of other speakers and Londoners, Lesley Anne Philips will be speaking on Naomi Campbell’s contribution to fashion in the city.

The Land Cruisers and Range Rovers began lining up on a steamy Sunday afternoon outside Tafawa Balewa Square long before sunset. The banking tycoon Otunba Subomi Balogun was hosting his 80th birthday party and nobody wanted to be late, and there was also the matter of inching past the press of beggars living in the square’s arcade. Once through a security line, women in gold headdresses and men in white robes disembarked. Balogun lives in a mansion modeled on the White House, furnished entirely in white and gold, and the invitation had asked guests to wear his favorite colors. NY Times

Carmelo Anthony attended the “For the Love of Cinema” dinner hosted by IWC Schaffhausen and Tribeca Film Festival at Urban Zen on 17 April 2014 in New York City. The American professional basketball player, or husband to LaLa Anthony if you watch ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’, wore a plum coloured Ozwald Boatengsuit over a Prada knitwear from Spring Summer 2014. Design duo Agape Mdumulla & Sam Cotton of Agi & Sam have been announced as one of nineteen European nominees for the Woolmark Prize. As a UK representative, they will have the chance to scoop the first dedicated menswear award in the initiative’s three-year run. If Agi & Sam are successful, they will receive $50,000 Australian Dollars (£27,900) and join four other menswear finalists at London Collections: Men in January 2015.
