Aaron Kohn (Chief Emailer) and Phil Sandick (Chief Storyteller) are co-founders of African Lookbook. The two Americans lived and worked in Africa for multiple years, completing various journalism and art projects around the continent. Launched in 2012 at the urging of Chiefs and Elders across the Continent, Lookbook is a space for discussion revolving around oral histories and products in an online shop.
‘Our interviews are primary sources: raw, academic in nature, and uneditorialized. For our shop, we work with people around the world to help us find cutting edge African products. We recognize the problems inherent in the selection of interviewees and products. Our solution is to cast as wide of a net as possible given our limited resources’
1. Shop
Lookbook’s shop brings with it a slew of African designers whose work has never been available in the US market. For more background on African Lookbook: Our Story and Press Materials.
2. Postcards from Africa
In Johannesburg, we shot a look book called “Postcards from Africa”, featuring the products available for sale in our store. We are offering these images as actual postcards — for free — to anyone who is interested.
3. New Interview with Ousmane M’Baye
Apart from making these new products available (and more are on their way), we are still committed to producing Oral Histories. Here’s our latest interview, with Senegalese furniture designer, Ousmane M’Baye.
