We can’t seem to fall out of love at GLAMM ….but why should we? Which is why our summer 2012 collection is dubbed “Playful Romance 2” (the first was released in Summer 2011). The notion of romance, and the playful fantasies that surround it, continues to be an inspiration for us at GLAMM. The result is a collection of clothes that are elegant yet playful and glamorous yet flirty! A lot of our visual inspiration came from movies from the 50s, our parent’s photo albums from the 70s, and fashion advertisements from the 70s. We had such a blast going through the various inspiration items. For this collection, we wanted to use fabrics that were a bit playful. GLAMM is known for creating exquisite pieces with Ankara (a wax-dyed cotton fabric that comes in vibrant prints and patterns and is popular in West Africa). For the “Playful Romance 2”collection, we decided to mix the Ankara fabrics with lighter materials such as patterned chiffon, lace, and silk. We also used some damask and added adornments to the female pieces. While many of the pieces in this collection are reminiscent of eras past, we added modern twists to the clothing to create structural silhouettes. Our end results were astounding – elegant yet flirty peplum dresses, fitted jumpers with bow details, vibrant rompers, patterned chiffon wide-leg pants, flirty lace tops and dresses, and classic men’s linen tops with structural asymmetrical details, to name a few. We admit it – we’re hopeless romantics… at least for the time being! GLAMM was formed by two artistic friends (Mary Ajetunmobi and Gbemi Alli-Odedina) in 2009. The company was birthed out of the women’s keen desire to create unique fashion items that merge African fabrics with Western culture design patterns. Types of fabric used
Our core fabric is Ankara and batik in different patterns and vibrant colors. For this collection, we also used a lot of lace, chiffon, silk, and some brocade.
