BOF spotlights South African designer Drew Henry whose collection at the recent Central Saint Martins BA show exuded a lot of promise. The collection references the tradesmen and domestic workers of the 60s and 70s-era photos and the “characters” Henry encountered growing up. It also takes inspiration from the indigenous Ndebele and Shangaan people. I particularly like the designers use of laser cut and dyed animal skin which we all know exists in abundance in Africa, so much that the like of Versace, Zara and even Online retails giant ASOS source leather from Africa. We need to get more African students into top design schools so they can compete on an international level and improve their skills.
